Exactly how can the government tell an adult seeking such a thing they can’t talk with someone else about this?
Yes, there have been some bad practices in the past, just as there have been with other psychiatric practices such as badly done or punitive electroshock therapy. But to make a blatant prohibition on the GOALS of any new kinds of treatment is lunacy.
Here is only one of the problems with having a law like this in place: A therapist treats an anxious patient for a variety of issues, carefully avoiding mentioning homosexuality and aiming at the patient's extreme anxiety That patient becomes more mentally healthy and he gives up the gay lifestyle of his own accord. Soon he sends other uncomfortable gay people to the doctor, claiming the doctor can help them, too. Some are helped; some are not; but one of them brings up his homosexuality repeatedly, remains defensive, isn't changed because he really doesn't have an open mind that it might actually be possible; then turns around and sues the doctor for fraud and abuse, because it is against the law to treat homosexuality, even if the patient brought it up or begged for it.
This is a sucker and entrapment law. It's like the cake baker entrapment, when dozens of other bakers are available, but everyone must be made to comply. Even some PhD psychology programs have forced Christians to "affirm" homosexuality and prevent them from refusing to treat gay patients affirmatively, and have thrown some PhD candidates out of the program after years of study rather than grant them a degree, even if they try to refer the patients to a doctor who is supportive of the homosexual agenda. Several of them have won their lawsuits agains the universities, but it took a terrible toll on their lives.
