Thursday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joes,” co-host Joe Scarborough and HBO’s “Real Time” host Bill Maher decried political correctness, which they both said was having a detrimental impact on the Democratic Party. According to Maher, abiding by the rules of political correctness is harmful to Democratic candidates. “[T]hey project kind of weakness, and I think it is internal. I mean you see them already apologizing too much for things that really don’t merit an apology. Obviously, if you do something terrible you should apologize for it. But we’ve seen it up and down the ranks, that people who have had to start their campaigns — and it is not a good way. You keep saying, ‘You’re sorry,’ you look like a sorry candidate.

The left is starting to realize that the PC monster they created is turning on them. No better example than #metoo.
I’ve said it before: if Trump makes this campaign about Political Correctness he wins. PC isn’t about insisting that there are 357 genders, PC is about using the power of the state to force everyone to agree or they go to jail. The gender game, the personal pronoun game, the “you can’t say that” game, they’re all just means to an end, and that end is complete control and punishment of anyone the PC thugs decide they don’t like.

But the point is that even if all the popular narrative about "McCarthyism" is true, it lasted a mere five years, from his initial charges in his February 1950 speech until the senate censure vote in December 1954.
I'm not sure we can pinpoint where the era of political correctness started, but it is still running amok.

Re “McCarthyism” one of Hollywood’s many dirty secrets is that there never was a blacklist even though they still whine about it six decades later. The so-called Hollywood 10 just kept working under pseudonyms for a few years, then began using their real names again.
Their monster has turned on them. Good.
IIRC, after the Soviet Union died in 1991, material from their archives from that period basically vindicated what McCarthy and Richard Nixon and others had said and done regarding Communist witch-hunts. I can also remember that both JFK and his father thought very highly of Senator McCarthy as well.
The broken Soviet cryptographic codes were a national security treasure. Outing spies and moles with 100% accuracy would have tipped our hand.
At one time, political correctness was just being overly polite. Then in the late 1990s, intesectionality was born, based in large part on the 1930s Frankfurt School’s “critical theory”. Intesectionality formalized political correctness into a political ideology.
In the last 10 years or so, intersectionality has reached critical mass. It was not so much endorsed by the political left, it became joined with the political left, creating a symbiosis.
I do not see how the progressive left can separate itself from political correctness without separating itself from intersectionality. And I do not see how the progressive left can separate itself from intersectionality without killing the patient.
The House Un-American Committee was formed in 1938 and ran until 1975 was the one that investigated Hollywood. McCarthy did not serve on that committee nor did he testify before it.

I have been quite consistent in saying that “PC” should have been declared the very first causality by the close of business on 11 September, 2001. That Communist inspired bravo sierra should have been buried beneath the rubble of the World Trade Center Twin Towers for all time.

I am sick to death of hearing the name of the great American patriot Senator Joe McCarthy, used in such a distorted and reckless manner!
The current version of the Communist Party who call themselves democRATs, validate and vindicate virtually everything that the late Senator tried to warn us about when he was alive. They do so on an almost hourly basis.
If I had my way about it, a monument would be erected in our nation’s capitol in his honor.
