Much to the delight of its rival up north, the pretentious meter was pegged in the middle of August when Ohio State confirmed that it had filed the paperwork seeking a trademark on the word The as it pertains to items being marketed with the universitys name. Buckeye Nation, of course, takes great pride in letting everyone know that they are THE Ohio State University at nearly every turn, and the university is simply looking to protect that brand of self-identification.

Related to your jesting of the University of Southern California, years ago, when I was a graduate student at the University of Washington, USC was annoyed about people calling them Southern Cal so the SID sent out information about acceptable terms to call their athletic teams. TEH

And from there we go to The (tm) cat, The (tm) dog, etc.
I used to work there.
Spoiled children, the staff even more so than the typical student.
Furman University.
It is a scenic place though.
When I was an undergraduate at the University of Idaho, we would remind the University of Montana Lady Griz basketball players what a female bear is called.
