After commanding an LCT on Utah Beach, my dad was XO on an LST. They were on their way to the Pacific when the war ended.
My father was back home on leave, expecting to be shipped to the Pacific Theater as an engineer. He was hitch-hiking back to California and was somewhere in Wyoming when the car radio of the vehicle he was riding in reported the first atomic bomb dropped.
He spent the next 8 months or so in California “doing nothing” in his own words, before being discharged in ‘46. I’m pretty sure I would not be here if it weren’t for the dropping of the Atomic Bombs.
