Looking back 40-plus years, that described me to within an inch of my life.

Straight-A student, even if I had to overachieve to get there.

Close to my parents, especially my father, who was a stern but kind disciplinarian and the most basically decent person I have known.

Well regarded by my teachers and grown ups in general, who generally thought I was mature for my age.

Not exactly “popular” with classmates but not without friends either.

Couldn’t get a date to save my life. And this from a guy 6-1, on the husky side but not obese.

I think it was that straight-A student thing. Chicks hate intelligence — that’s why they gladly give themselves to losers who mistreat them.

Our Eagle Scout 19 year old son points to his 1988 Toyota MR2 that he is restoring when his little sister asks why he doesn’t want to have a girlfriend, and he responds “that’s all the drama I need, parked right there.”

You are 20 years younger than me. (Wow, hurts to say that) No way would I have avoided an A student, was one myself. During high school I ate lunches alone mostly. No guys at my school were interested in girls with brains (that, and they looked like boys). That being said I was dating at 15, just not from my school.

In my experience, that's situational dependent. It's more accurate to say that women gravitate toward the "alpha," dominant males under the circumstances. Sure, in a high school setting, intelligence isn't going to rate for much. Cocky jocks are at the top of the heap in that environment... and thus are most attractive to the average girl. On the other hand, there are many environments in which intelligent men will dominate. For example, in a hospital setting, the doctors are on top, and the young female nurses are more likely to pursue smart doctors than stupid orderlies. Ditto most graduate school-type environments. I'd bet money that the (few) women in, say, graduate-level physics go for the smartest guys in the department.

I had a similar experience - although I was not 6’1”. I was however fit.

I was preaching by special invitation at 19.

At a Christian school, the good girls (including the ones who really did seem good) still went for the bad boys and dumb jocks.

Many of these girls told me how much they respected me; some said I was the most honorable man they knew. Yet they did not want to date me. They did value me as a Christian friend. (My point is that they did not see me as a creep, or try to avoid me.)

It took some time, but I eventually called a halt to it all.

Some of them are now divorced.

My opinion is:

Intelligent men are both too little and too much a challenge:

Too little: Such a man does not need a woman to transform his lump of coal into a diamond.

Too much: Such a man cannot be so easily manipulated, and may arouse a woman’s insecurity.

You sound like a deep still water type. Consider the older woman. :) Church going Christian preferably. They’ll be there on Sunday.

Every women I have ever met said intelligence is in the top 5 criteria for dating.
