Outdoor cats have short lifespan. We have indoor-only cats that have lived in some cases well over 20 years.

Dear friend, I hope you are able to find a suitable kitty to make the wife happy again. I thought I could never love an animal anywhere near as much as I do dogs. Then I rescued a cat from being euthanized and I find that cats very quickly get into your heart. My cat is with my estranged wife, and I often sneak over to check on it. She wails with delight and almost turns herself inside out with joy. I will be deeply saddened when her time is up. Best of luck.
I have an outdoor daytime cat that comes in at night when I whistle. I have lost cats to coyotes so I trained this one when he was a kitten. He has only missed coming in one night in 3-1/2 years. He was young then and so happy to see us in the morning, it never happened again.
I had an outdoor cat that lived to be 16. I really miss that guy
