Those short, intense “flares” or “lines of light” are what I’ve see in most meteor flashes. The two long, extensive meteor flares I’ve seen stretched across more than 1/4 of the sky, but neither made any sound.
The nuclear blasts that were lit off just northwest of Los Vegas in the 50’s weapons tests were heard as distinct long roars (not a single boom as in the closer listeners) but were delayed 15-20 minutes going from Los Vegas to LA. So, that you or a neighbor heard a meteor explosion may mean the explosion and flash were many minutes earlier than your warning by sound. The Los Vegas area flashes from the nuclear bombs were seen clearly in the night skies from LA.
