Aka the puss caterpillar...really!
Yet another good reason to live where there is a four season climate, including that nice killing frost.
Well, I went ahead and did the math and it seems they could well see 10 million people a year, somehow.
If we divide $25 billion by 10 million we arrive at an average cost per patient of $2,500, which is line with national averages.
Still, unbelievable they see 1/3 of the population
I’ve never heard of them being called asps...usually they’re called puss caterpillars, because of their furry looks...
The moth that they become is kind of cute...like a teddy bear with furry wings.
Clipped off first part of sentence:
Live oak trees lining sidewalks in the
Texas Medical Center (TMC) - which is visited by 10 million people seeking health care each year - are routinely netted to discourage pesky birds such as grackles and pigeons.
I got stung by one two weeks ago for the first time. While it was painful, it was the after effect that was the worst. Half my hand swelled up with intense itching that lasted for a week.
Another thing I didn't know, unlike yellow jackets and other stinging bees, they don't leave their stinger in your hand.
No hornet sting I ever got lasted for several days. Usually the pain is gone in an hour.
Yes, that IS true. "The largest medical complex in the world." They don't all go to one building. There are over 60 facilities. (And, of course, they aren't all there due to caterpillars.)
The toxin would make a great weapon, as long as the other guy doesn’t have it, too.
I was stung by one on my arm as a child. Horrible pain!
And yes, The Texas Medical Center is busy. Parking is not bad. My husband had surgery in one building and was transported through another building. He ended up across the street in a third hospital. I took my valet parking ticket down and my car was found and driven to my new location where they let me get luggage out. They reparked it without additional fees. The whole Medical Center is awesome. MDAnderson is the place to go if you have a cancer diagnosis.
When I was a kid in Dallas, the one warning I remember from my mom was “watch out for asps - they drop from trees to bite you and that is BAD!”
Hadn’t heard about asps in quite some time... Will remember this if I ever need a hospital in Houston - not likely tho.
Wondering, what exactly is a ‘patient encounter’?
And why that term?
"Much of the documentation and attestation of meaningful use is based on patient encounters. Well, what exactly is a patient encounter? This is obvious for an internist or general practitioner. Not so obvious for others"...
Looks like it comes out of that pile of shite known as 0bamacare.
??? If you see a GP for brain pain, he sends you for a scan and a Neurologist.
GP + Radiologist + Neurologist + second opinions = SIX OR MORE for ONE PATIENT ONE VISIT.

Anyone using jargon, acronyms, abbreviations, slang without an accompanying explanation should be publicly caned 10 strokes bare ass first offense! An additional ten for repeat offenders.
Yes, it is TEXAS BIG! HUGE!
But.
Objects In The Mirror Are Larger Than They Appear.
Please see explanation in #33.
Most painful thing I endured as a child was an asp sting.
That’s the explanation
Visits + referrals, etc
It’s good to hear that your medical care there is so good.
That is a real blessing, especially these days.
Never had these mean caterpillars in the Denver area where I grew up AFAIK. Thankfully!
Learned real fast not to mess around in trees with asp nests after getting stung when I was kid.
IIRC, household ammonia solution eased the pain?
