The Mongols believed they were divinely chosen to rule the world. When they approached a city, the residents were given a choice. Surrender and they'd be treated well and be incorporated into the empire. But if you resisted, then you were defying the mandate of heaven and there could be no mercy. When the Pope sent a letter to the Mongols asking that they spare Christians, the Mongol emperor at the time, Guyuk, sent back this letter:

"You must say with a sincere heart: "We will be your subjects; we will give you our strength". You must in person come with your kings, all together, without exception, to render us service and pay us homage. Only then will we acknowledge your submission. And if you do not follow the order of God, and go against our orders, we will know you as our enemy.

Wish we could go back in time and find out what lies this little twerp had to say to get his power in the first place. Lies aside from being 'born to the manor' - born on third - thinking he hit a triple... (like half the fools living in DC today. Incompetent sons and grandsons of people who made it on merit...) I suspect those lies would sound the same across time too...
