"present physical laws only have meaning within our own universe, the theories invariably require some aspect of our universe to have been present before the singularity."

THE singularity? A singularity is a mathematical concept, not a physical reality. Some physical things may be treated mathematically as a singularity even if they are not actually infinitely small. Whether a black hole hundreds of light years away is infinitely small, or not is irrelevant. The math works. The odds are pretty good that you can't really pack all the mass making up a black hole into a spot that has no volume.

Regardless of size, if all present physical laws came into being with the Big Bang, any attempt to describe conditions prior to the Big Bang using constructs from our present universe are invalid.
