Dakota Fanning has responded to allegations of whitewashing over her latest role.
In Sweetness in the Belly, adapted from Camilla Gibb's 2005 novel and screening in Toronto, the actress recently seen as a Manson girl in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in...Hollywood plays a child refugee who is abandoned in Africa by her parents and raised in Ethiopia as Muslim.
The first clip from the film, directed by Zeresenay Berhane Mehari, was released earlier this week, and fell foul of several online commentators, who complained on social media that Fanning's role which originally Saoirse Ronan was attached to play should have gone to a Muslim actress or a woman of color.

Well if Bruce Jenner can be a women...
The definition and usage of “race” appears to have changed during the last few decades.
I expect 'species' to be the next to have its commonly accepted definition to be clouded by the language trans-mogrifiers of the LEFT. George Orwell's 1984 was supposed to be a WARNING, not an instructional manual!
Dakota is correct to defend herself playing that role, not that she really needs to defend. This is a ‘Fish Outta Water’ type theme, where a native Brit has been displaced, and fated to grow up in Ethiopia.
The other good reason to cast her for the part is Dakota is a professional and well known actress. Having a darker skin tone would not guarantee that you get someone who can emote and play to the cameras during filming. It’s not easy staying in character with half dozen giant cameras pointed at you, following your every movement the way a kitten follows a red strobe light. Staying focused becomes a valuable skill.
A person of color?
Which one? Pink, off white, chatreuse, ochre, green?
This “women of color” sh*t is really pathetic. I also believe people of the Mideast are Caucasians.
I have been thinking the same thing.
You become less than human when Islam enters your soul.
Well, I guess for more believability, a Muslim family or a family of "color" might be more likely to abandon their child in Africa....and it seems that the whole plot falls apart even further if she didn't end up being a delivery system for a bomb...
Race is like gender.
It’s whatever you say it is.
