I don't think that's it.

If my memory serve me correctly, the hurricane I'm thinking of formed in the middle of the Atlantic well east of Puerto Rico and was headed straight for it.
Then, when no one was predicting it to reverse course, it reverse course and back-tracked its path for a little over 100 miles and then started back west-north-west and missed Puerto Rico with the main portion of the hurricane.
I think it was after 1986 and before 2002/
But I cannot remember its name or its date.
It was sometime around the Feast of Tabernacles.
