The Navy has ordered dozens of warships and aircraft to evacuate two bases in northeast Florida ahead of the anticipated arrival of Hurricane Dorian.
On Thursday, the Navy's Fourth Fleet declared "Sortie Condition Alpha" for ships homeported at Mayport Naval Station at the mouth of the St. Johns River east of Jacksonville. Sortie Condition Alpha" means units must prepare to dispatch or deploy because destructive weather is expected within 24 hours.

Though the gates of Disneys Hollywood Studios were not scheduled to open until 6 a.m. on Thursday, officials surprised the thousands of fans gathered with early entry around 4:45 a.m., the Orlando Sentinel reports.
When Hurricane Agnes threatened Florida in 1972, my husband was on a mission in the Pacific with Air Force Eastern Test Range out of Patrick AFB. The official position was that if a hurricane threatened, the crews always evacuated with the aircraft and the dependents were on their own. So, the AF ordered his aircraft to land at Barksdale AFB in Louisiana to wait out the hurricane. It turned out that Agnes didn’t affect us much, but it did massive damage in the northeast US. I hope the dependents at Patrick AFB, which is on the beaches, take this seriously.
I am really glad that I am not the type of person, nor live in a place, that if the need for sandbags arises I need to go to a government designated facility to get my ‘allotment’ of 10 - I’’ get and fill my own bags, and do a hundred of them if I need to, all from my own property thank you.
God help this country if something reall bad happens - society would completely break down in less than a month, probably a lot less.
The avergae person is useless - which means that 50% are less than useless.
Back when the Disney corporation was building it, the Four Families who ran Orange county, cattle country, DID NOT want Disney there. They passed a series of local ordinances that were specific to Disney, demanding wildly overbuilt construction for public venues, not hurricane resistant, but hurricane PROOF, to try to make Disney rethink building there.
Didn't work, but that's where to go to be safe from a 100 year storm...
I bet the hotels here in Atlanta are full. I should talk to someone from the local CVB, just out of curiosity.
Starting to look like Dorian may not land in Florida - the Carolinas seem to be in more danger if current trend continues....here’s hoping it decides to boomerang into the Atlantic and not screw with anyone.
Smarter than the folks who are leaving their boats in FL marinas and shrugging their shoulders. They’ve had plenty of lead time to sail them north or west.
FL Division of Emergency Management says: “Make sure to have a tank full of gas”
The people who have an electric car will be out of luck. In fact, having an electric car in a disaster situation like a hurricane is stupid and dangerous!
I’ll never get an electric car!
What happens if it happens on election day?
Disney also largely underground. Only problem with that is the potential for flooding if the ground water overwelms the pumping system.
Well now it looks diverted to the north but lets don’t have another Tyndall AFB debacle by leaving precious and high value assets in harm’s way.
When you stroll down Mainstreet USA, you are about 20 feet in the air. You can prove it if you have an altimeter on your phone.
My aunt made her millions as a real estate agent, in Kissimmee, as the only one who was willing to drive her Mk V Lincoln down dirt tracks to find the old swamp rats in cabins. She was the local purchasing agent for 24,000 contiguous acres.
Before front companies in Chicago, New York, Wilmington, started making quiet, absurd offers for swamp land in central Florida, there was one paved street in Kissimmee, in front of the Brahma Hotel.
It was all Disney. Once Walt had full title to every square inch, THEN he announced that he was going to build the City of Tomorrow. The Four Families in Orange county had convulsions. They had run the area like a private kingdom for a century, owning the judges and the police departments, and grazing cattle.
I served on the USS FDR (CVA-42), home based in Mayport FL.
In 1962 (I think), the ship had to go to sea because Hurricane Donna was approaching. Only ships’ company personnel were aboard, as all squadrons’ planes and personnel were at NAS JAX.
The ship had to go directly into the storm. It was rough. My berthing area was just below the flight deck plates so high up above the water. We had to tie ourselves into our racks using hemp rope. The chow hall served nothing but black coffee and crackers, but many sailors still got sea sick.
Once we had passed through the ‘cane it was calm. Topside, we found some of the steel catwalks around the flight deck had been bent upward and almost onto the deck (about 60 ft. above the water, normally).
