Question: who brings in the bedbugs? Any particular social/racial groups? I hate going to hotels anymore. I check the beds and I still sleep on top of the covers.

She sure does. Luckily she's on day shift so only hears about it.

I don't rightfully know who brings in bedbugs. So far, her hotel hasn't had a problem with them for as long as she's been there. But I think you can tell when you see some large family groups of all ethnicities and races who just seem to be dirty or unkempt. A group that when you look at them you say to yourself "aw man, they're really going to trash the place". They'll spend a little extra time cleaning certain rooms.

My wife's hotel does a very good job making sure ALL bedding is cleaned. But if you're worried about bedding, you should be more worried about the comforters than anything.

It's quick, easy, and efficient to wash and change sheets and pillow cases. Comforters are bulkier, you can't wash as many at once, they're harder to dry, etc. So if you stay in a place that cuts corners and you're suspicious, I'd get rid of the comforter.

Also check the base of your shower curtains. A good way to overall assess the cleanliness of your bedding is to see if they take the time to ensure you have fresh-laundered shower curtains and liners. If they don't bother to change them, they'll stain or even mold at the bottom. If you see that, then you can be rightfully suspicious of the rest.

I thought when my wife started working that I'd hear all of the horror stories about cleanliness. I've been pretty surprised at how hard they DO work to avoid those issues.

On an extended stay, tip your housekeeper early. Tell her you'd like her to ensure that all of your bedding is fresh from the laundry. Also, tell her you'd like her to make sure you have clean shower curtains and liners from the laundry as well. While all of this should be "as expected", a quick well-placed $10 bill can help provide piece of mind.

Update: She said they have to look out for any tour busses from Arizona or the Southwest. That’s when they worry about bedbugs.
