Basketball is really a challenge for them as they are usually so short. Plus, they are fascinated with tall people. I knew a VERY tall white girl, well over 6’, who told the story of being on top of the Empire State building and a group of Chinese women were more fascinated with her and her mom(also tall) than with the panoramic views of NYC. They all wanted pics of themselves standing next to those tall gals.

by American missionaries, who viewed it as a tool for promoting Christian ideals of masculinity and health

Missed the mark on that one I'm afraid.

First some B-ball, then we return to our regularly scheduled pogrom.
Thank you. Thank you. I will be here all week. Don’t forget to tip the waitress.

I call bs.

I’ve been to 3 major cities in China. Not a single outdoor basketball court.

Shanghai has about 30 million people...There was not 1 sporting event being played in the city on a whole weekend in early March of this year.

The people can’t use the parks the play anything. They must stay on the sidewalks. The grass is off limits.

Very sad...

I once read that basketball become popular in China because Zhu De, the head of the PLA (Chinese Army) since its early days - learned the sport as a boy at the YMCA in China.

He felt it was a good sport for the troops, because it didn’t need any space or infrastructure besides a ball and hoop, and promoted teamwork. So he deemed that it should be played on Chinese PLA bases.

It’s a cheap sport to play, in a relatively small area. It works well in urban and rural settings.
