Basketball is really a challenge for them as they are usually so short. Plus, they are fascinated with tall people. I knew a VERY tall white girl, well over 6’, who told the story of being on top of the Empire State building and a group of Chinese women were more fascinated with her and her mom(also tall) than with the panoramic views of NYC. They all wanted pics of themselves standing next to those tall gals.

Depends on which part of China you are from. Southerners tend to be shorter than the northerners.

Basketball is also the favorite Filipino sport, and Filipinos may be even shorter than the Chinese, on average.

The secret is cost and availability. A basketball court is much smaller than a football field, and even less space is required for a useful practice space, a few square meters and a pole with a hoop.

by American missionaries, who viewed it as a tool for promoting Christian ideals of masculinity and health

Missed the mark on that one I'm afraid.

RE: That’s like, what...3%? LOL

See Post No. 12 above. That’s 21% of the population.

Divide 300 million by 1.4 billion.

I call bs.

I’ve been to 3 major cities in China. Not a single outdoor basketball court.

Shanghai has about 30 million people...There was not 1 sporting event being played in the city on a whole weekend in early March of this year.

The people can’t use the parks the play anything. They must stay on the sidewalks. The grass is off limits.

Very sad...

Have you heard of the Shanghai Sharks? (上海 大鯊魚 ) One of the most popular sports teams in China. This is the team that developed YAO MING.

I was in China about ten years ago. In my hotel room I glanced at the news. Their news spent about as much time covering the NBA as an American local city tv news broadcast.

I once read that basketball become popular in China because Zhu De, the head of the PLA (Chinese Army) since its early days - learned the sport as a boy at the YMCA in China.

He felt it was a good sport for the troops, because it didn’t need any space or infrastructure besides a ball and hoop, and promoted teamwork. So he deemed that it should be played on Chinese PLA bases.
