It can be shown for the first time after a near complete skull of Australopithecus anamensis was found in Ethiopia.
The ape-like adult male was about 5ft and weighed about 100lbs.
Females were about 3ft 5in and around 62lbs.
An upper jaw was found first. Dr Yohannes Haile-Selassie, of Cleveland Museum of Natural History, told journal Nature: I couldnt believe my eyes when I spotted the rest.
"It was a dream come true.
"This is a game changer in our understanding of human evolution during the Pliocene."
Professor Fred Spoor, an expert in anatomy at London's Natural History Museum, said the skull is "a great addition to the fossil record."
Prof Spoor, who was not involved in the study, added: "This cranium looks set to become another celebrated icon of human evolution."

The former may be adapted to tasks other than seeing one's way between the trees.
lol, True. But seriously... That is extremely disproportionate for a 5 ft human or primate. I think this is way off and actually a smaller sized primate (3-3.5ft) they found here and not a taller hominid at all.
Tell that to the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Uh, Danny? Methinks you’ve got the wrong thread... ( Budget Surplus/Deficit)
I know, I mentioned “other” primates in my statement. But Hominids are unique from other primates so I have to classify them as separate species somehow correct? :)
I’ve always liked the question: “If we’re descended from apes, how come there are still apes?
Must have been a Democrat...and probably still votes.
Yes, I've noticed that but since soft tissue like the eyes are not fossilized, the postulated eyes are a WAG (Wild Assed Guess)!
Whose eyes did they use for the mock up?
LOL! Al Green's great-grandfather no doubt...Alley Oop Sr.
You’re right, the chart doesn’t go back that far.
Close. Morelike the monkey is your uncle!
That is what I was wondering, is this unique difference one of the known scientific identifiers between the two like teeth or jaw sockets, etc.? Meaning all hominids would of course by default have eyes like humans not like other primates?
Must have been some link to Henry Waxman
They keep coming up with a new fossil that ‘proves’ the theory of evolution only to walk it back at a later date.
Yup. But a lot further up the tree...
That’s a chimp. I heard about “Lucy” all those years, and the first “humans” bla bla bla ad nauseum for 20 years in National Geographic.
Then one day, I saw a scale model of “Lucy” in a museum. All I could think was “dammit, the SOBs tricked me again. That’s a chimp of some sort and that’s all”.
“Since the nose doesnt remain, how do they know it
was so flat??”
The same way they know it had brown eyes, and a beard. They made it up.
