While a number of Caribbean destinations struggle, resorts in the Bahamas are bouncing back from a tough period, attracting vacationers, gamblers and sun worshipers.

Hotel occupancy in the Bahamas in the first half of 2019 was up 19% from a year earlier, according to hotel-data firm STR. Revenue per available room, a popular industry metric, was up 27% to $231. Nearby destinations’ rates have fallen or stayed flat.

In part, the strong Bahamas numbers reflect the emergence of the $4.2 billion, 2,300-room Baha Mar resort and casino, which officially opened last year after falling more than two years behind schedule and changing ownership.

I’m calling bullcrap. It’s just the ChiComs laundering money and getting it out of the mainland before everything goes chop suey.

Hotels are one of the single greatest money laundering opportunities. Ask the Pritzkers of Chicago. Just because the room is booked and paid for doesn’t mean anyone actually stayed in it.

Baha Mar was built with Chinese prison labor. Modern day slave labor.

I read somewhere recently that the Bahamas (outside of the beaches and resorts) are kinda run-down and have definite crime issues.

Is there any truth to that?

Yeah but in the Bahamas the people actually act like they're glad you came. Can't say that for some U.S. resorts I've been to.

Yes.If you go and stay in say Port Lucaya, it is safe as they rely on tourista dollars. Wander off on Grand Bahamas Highway you may be stopped and robbed or worse.

We just went to Grand Bahama over New Year’s and had a great time

If you’re American if you go anywhere in the Bahamas there’s no customs and you fly through Nassau or Grand Bahama that’s a big advatntage so you don’t have to wait in those long lines in Miami
