Humans ruined everything. They bred too much and choked the life out of the land, air and sea.
And so they must be vaporized by half, or attacked by towering monsters, or vanquished by irate dwellers from the oceans polluted depths. Barring that, they face hardscrabble, desperate lives on a once verdant Earth now consumed by ice or drought.
That is how many recent superhero and sci-fi movies among them the latest Avengers and Godzilla pictures as well as Aquaman, Snowpiercer, Blade Runner 2049, Interstellar and Mad Max: Fury Road have invoked the climate crisis. They imagine postapocalyptic futures or dystopias where ecological collapse is inevitable, environmentalists are criminals, and eco-mindedness is the driving force of villains.
But these takes are defeatist, critics say, and a growing chorus of voices is urging the entertainment industry to tell more stories that show humans adapting and reforming to ward off the worst climate threats.
More than ever, theyre missing the mark, often in the same way, said Michael Svoboda, a writing professor at George Washington University and author at the multimedia site Yale Climate Connections. Almost none of these films depict a successful transformation of society.
In Avengers: Infinity War, the archnemesis, Thanos, opts to head off environmental collapse by reducing humanity along with all living beings by half. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, eco-terrorists unleash predatory beasts to forestall mass extinction and keep the human population in check. In Aquaman, King Orm, the leader of an undersea kingdom, concludes that the only way to prevent earthly destruction is to wage war on humans.
David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, one of the writers of Aquaman, said using pollution as a motivator made Orm more relatable and less mustache-twirly, and added, It gave him some nuance.

Wanna know how to see the “global warming” scam? How it is not for saving the world, not to help save people, not for saving the polar bear and is all about massively growing government power?
1. The most far left wing rich/celebrity/politician supporters of “global warming” continue to buy uber-expensive beach front property. Beach front property, all around world, continues to rise in price. If they believed their own hype, beach front property should be worthless and they wouldn’t go anywhere near it.
2. The most far left wing rich/celebrity/politician supporters of “global warming” are the most radical anti-nuclear power nuts you can find. Think about it, a power source that is capable of providing the power needs to an entire country without adding one “green house” gas or emission. If “global warming” was that real and that imminent, they would be screaming to close down every fossil fuel power generation station (to include natural gas) and replace it with nuclear power.
3. When “scientists” or government bureaucrats find flaws in their data or models suggesting that their global warming doom predictions are not true or greatly exaggerated - they are sad or angry about it. Or even try to hide the new data. Any normal person, when told they and family were basically were about to die in a melting earth in the very near future, would be jumping for joy on finding this new data. They would partying on their new lease on life singing We are saved from destruction! But not these scammers.
Mad Max is post-nuclear
Hence the accusation in Fury Road hurrled at the hapless young warrior, “Who killed the world?”
Last time it was that warm, Vikings were invading.
So there is that.
Well, in the Godzilla movies the engine of destruction came from across the Pacific to the East, awakened by a nuclear bomb. Sound familiar?
The nuclear destruction thing didn't pan out, so global warming or some other thing will have to do for Hollywood.
Exactly. Hear what they say. Watch what they do. They dont square nor add up.
It reeks of scam and hoax.
Guess Hollywood has been studying & producing their own brand of baloney for so long that they are starting to believe it is real steak.
They’re not scared. It’s a way for them to accumulate more money and adulation.
Hollywood is inhabited by shallow thinkers, unable to grasp abstract concepts. Also, fantasy is their reality.
Because global warming causes gender inequity!
If they are so scared, they should give up their mansions and private jets.
That being said, it IS a good point that the villains in these movies are often radical Environmentalists. Or power mad lunatics who use the Environment as an excuse for their evil. To me, its the equivalent of a Freudian slip.
They’re not scared...they’re the propaganda arm of the communist left.
The left is drooling over all those taxes, fees and regulations they’ll get to control.
They all belong in an asylum...better yet, GITMO.
“Theyre not scared. Its a way for them to accumulate more money and adulation.”
And as part of the global elite further the end goal of population control.
They are the popular faces helping set up the con and trap.
How hot did the world get when everyone was dropping test nukes from 1945-1960s?
Yes, they only make what sells and reaps huge profits. They try to avoid making lots of Battlefield Earth and Heavans Gate and Ishtar type films.
That is true. They make films that promote their leftist agendas, no doubt about it.
I suspect they have other money making ventures going other than films that are tied into GlobalClimateWarmingChange BS. Carbon credits and who knows what else.
The Vikings haven’t invaded the Super Bowl in quite a while now.
Hey here’s an idea. A crazy black environmental leftist hunts Hollywood celebrities living large in their mansions, kills them, and he gives everything that they owned to the poor and homeless living on the street.. Call it “Robbin’ Da Hood!” Its art, so I’m sure that celebrities will come out to support it!
“Mad Max is post-nuclear”
yep. NYT is compelled to lie even about the little things ...
Because in a world of difficulties, the mentally ill and inadaquate fall below the darwinian thresholds of survival.
It is hard to cheat reality - something ‘hollywood’ has little grasp of.
