Wicked Witch of the East represented the banks/eastern concerns/ the Industrial Revolution....it turned men into heartless machines, who only lived to work.

the Wicked Witch of the West represented the gold miners/western concerns.....and the drought. She was destroyed by throwing water on her.

The scarecrow represented the Midwest farmer who believed he had no voice in Washington, and who was under the domination of the Wicked Witch of the West.

The Munchkins were "the little people" and the yellow brick road was gold.

The "poppies" are popular issues, used to put the public to sleep and distract them from reality.

Of course it took place in The Land of Oz....with oz being the abbreviation for ounce....the wizard being an unnamed US president. Emerald City....the color of "greenbacks".....(Washington DC)

Oh, why can’t such a fun story just be a fun story and nothing else! (I absolutely hated studying symbolism in school. I only wanted to enjoy the story!) The movie is one of my favorites. I haven’t read the books, but I need to. The first one, anyway. The only bit of trivia I recall is Oz came from a filing cabinet. One drawer was A-N and the other O-Z. :) And that’s all I ever want to remember whenever I watch the movie. Oh, and Dorothy was named after LFB’s niece, I believe.

Oooh, that’s a bingo, I want to start using that one.

“Emerald City....the color of “greenbacks”.....(Washington DC)”

And for those who don’t know why THAT matters, greenbacks were money issued directly by the government rather than the debt-based treasury notes that enslave us today. The book came out in 1900, so obviously the good guys lost, but here we are again.
