Super-geek Aaron Swartz was arrested in 2011 for mass downloading through the MIT computer network of academic journal articles from JSTOR, which licenses them to universities for a fee. The linked article suggests that he was really arrested for discovering a child porn site affiliated with the MIT Media Lab and its founder Nicolas Negroponte. Swartz conveniently died of "suicide" in January 2013, supposedly hanging himself with his belt.
It was, admittedly, a weird place. Purposely. My husband got his PhD at MIT and I’d go there occasionally to meet him after work. I was interested in their work with children, but it had NOTHING to do with anything funny. Like U of Chicago, there was a strong interest in how you got across programming concepts to children. So there was this mechanical turtle and the kids could touch it and transfer its POWER to their finger and they’d go around saying, “Look, I’ve got a turtle on my finger.” Turtle was the name, as I remember it, of the programming language.
And then there was the time I created a video for someone there about thieves stealing nuclear fuel from a train and I called the nuclear agency to confirm the details of what I was writing in the script. They called the person who contracted me, of course. MIT Media Lab was like a grown up playpen.
