To this day, many conservatives consider “Archie Bunker” a hero of the right.

Yet, his creator, uber-liberal Norman Lear, intended the narrow-minded Archie to be an example of atrocious conservative thinking.

Lear intended to show the world that conservatives were idiots.

Lear did not create the character. Archie Bunker is derived from Alf Garnett, just as the whole show All In The Family was derived from BBC’s Till Death Us Do Part.

Johnny Speight, the creator of the BBC series, was of course just as left-wing as Lear, portraying Garnett as “reactionary”.

Yes, indeed, Archie was mocked and derided.

Still, I’m grateful for O’Connor’s portrayal and wish that we deplorables had a similar character on TV today to admire.
