My theory is kids are doing more stupid things because they were cocooned from hurting themselves while younger. As a kid I learned pretty quickly you can get hurt while playing around—climbing trees, bike riding, tall slippery slides, seesaws, merry-go-rounds and even some diabolical play equipment invented by a friend’s welder father. We had lots of bruises, cuts and dings, even scars, but we learned to respect physics and avoid stupidity. Now I don’t advocate losing bike helmets or such but I think kids are far too protected by helicopter parents from learning that being stupid while little hurts and being stupid while older hurts even more.
Bump. Helicopter parents are NOT doing their kids any favors. Like you, I have several scars from my childhood. Learned my lessons the hard way. But that knowledge has paid many bonuses over the years.
