WYNNE, Ark. - The wife of an Arkansas county jailer is accused of pulling a gun on four black high school football players going door-to-door for a back-to-school athletic fundraiser.
Jerri Kelly, 46, of Wynne, was arrested Monday and charged with four counts of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a minor, according to FOX13 in Memphis. Wynne, which has a population of about 8,000, is about 50 miles west of the Tennessee city.
The Wynne Progress reported that a Facebook post by the mother of one of the players explained the situation: The four teens were selling discount cards to raise money for Wynne High School’s athletic program.
Athletic programs across the country have their athletes sell cards that offer discounts at local restaurants and businesses to raise funds for new equipment and other needs their cash-strapped school districts cannot afford.
“These boys had on their football jerseys, and this is common around this time of year in Wynne,” the post states, according to the newspaper. “All this lady had to do was say, ‘No, thank you,’ and close the door, but instead she chose to pull a gun out and traumatize these boys.”
Police officials confirmed Kelly is the wife of Cross County Jail administrator Joe Kelly.

I recently had some high-school football players ask me for a donation for their program outside of a local Walmart.
All minorities. They went to a high-school in a very tough area. Despite that they called me Sir and were extremely polite.
Sports can be a great benefit to young men if done properly.
Going door-to-door may not be the best approach.
four large youth in football jerseys may look intimidating... need more information as in were they far enough from the door to not be intimidating, were they loud and persistent, were they asked to leave and didn’t...

That was kinda long the lines of my first thoughts.
Why are all four kids going door to door together?
What kind of neighborhood was it? Was it somewhat rural and spread out where strangers don’t typically go knocking on doors?
The four boys could obviously have collected more contributions by splitting up, but no.
I strongly suspect they knew what they were doing. They were probing for reactions.
... not that this justificies any over-reaction. Not at all. It really amounts to a social experiment. But I don’t buy it that they didn’t know and weren’t looking for reactions.
Let me ask you this. If you sent four big white boys knocking on doors in certain neighborhoods, how long do you think it will take before they get a pretty dramatic incident?

There has to be more to this. One way or the other.
A lot of high school kids are already adult size, and anybody can wear a football shirt. To send that many people to anyone’s door at once is poor planning.
Ideally, one person could be at the door with a button or canister that quickly tells the homeowner what they are knocking for. Someone should be able to peer through that drilled in hole in the front door, and immediately, get a clear idea of the intent.
Even better, pass out some fliers in the neighborhood the week before, to alert and educate the homeowners. There are Veterans’Assistance Donation organizations that do this now.
Our house used to be where a neighbor called the cops whenever she suspected that ex-cons were taking exception to her husband the Sheriff.
Some of the ex-druggies can con a judge but she wouldn’t give them a chance to con her.

Now they know who she is.
My mom had an uncle who was a judge.
He lived on a farm out in the boonies.
We always worried about some thug he sent to prison
getting out and coming to look for him.
He always carried. And he subleased part of his farm to a police officer who lived there.
My mother, who was a good and Godly woman, was terrified by blacks. She literally trembled if we had to drive through a part of town where blacks were predominant. I don’t know why.
Young black men have only themselves to blame for people being afraid of them. Even Jesse Jackson has mentioned that he rather see whites coming up behind him than other blacks.

Put up a fence, gate, etc., post your property, deal sternly with trespassers. It’s worked for me for many years.
That may be her defense strategy when she goes to court.
They need to dress nice like Jahovah witnesses and be extremely polite if they’re going to knock on my door. I am rude to the peddlers who knock and tell me “working at you neighbors just down the road(no name given) he has a bad case of < carpenter ants/termites/crab grass etc> and while were here were going to see if his neighbors are interested in our service “
“NO. If I had those problems I’d fix it myself or call someone I know is licensed and bonded”. Or if I knew someone who had good results I call their guy.
When jahovas witness’s show up I take their pamphlet politely and thank them. I then chuck it In The round file after they leave.
They sometime come to my door saying I need to replace my roof or windows or siding sometime. They must be blind because it’s all new. “My family does that work” I say.
Sometimes black children from some organization I never heard wearing reflective vests come buy selling candy for a school deal (I don’t know what this is but it happens at least once a year and their are people driving around in cars moving them from place to place) Perhaps sports I don’t know. I tell them ‘sorry we’re diabetic’.
I do occasionally see these kids pushing their wears in front of the supermarket (can also be boy scouts, Girl Scouts or whatever and I’ll stick some folding money into their can but don’t take cookies/candy.
I don’t like door to door peddling except when the local school kids need money for their (name sport) from a school I know and they have a flyer from that school explaining who and where they are and I know them and/or their cause.
Thanksgiving and Christmas time I buy $50 and $100 supermarket gift certificates from a local supermarket and bring them to the church who give them to the neediest in the neighborhood.
I’m not a hard @$$ but I don’t like strangers selling me stuff at my front door. And I make my words brief before quickly closing the door. I don’t point or even brandish Guns at these people but guns are always quick to retrieve if I have to.
The defendant facing multiple felony counts would be the correct answer now.
