If you can get hold of any Alexander Thom books. They are thick but a fast read. Have read more than one through the day or night. Cannot put down and they are all based on true stories. He really brings the characters alive.

Is this the right one?

Alexander “Sandy” Thom (26 March 1894 – 7 November 1985) was a Scottish engineer most famous for his theory of the Megalithic yard, categorisation of stone circles and his studies of Stonehenge and other archaeological sites.[1][unreliable source?]
