Honor The Fallen

On August 12, 1969 Phuoc Long Province, Republic of Vietnam, two days before the Woodstock Concert....

Specialist Fourth Class Leonard L. Alvarado 1st Air Cav was with a reaction force seeking to rescue an ambushed platoon.

When he detected movement, SPC4 Alvarado advanced forward while opening fire. A grenade exploded and wounded him. He killed the enemy grenade thrower. While braving grenade and automatic weapons fire, SPC4 Alvarado dragged several wounded comrades back to a hasty perimeter. Knowing they would be overrun by a superior enemy force, he advanced forward alone through machine gun fire on the enemy.

Though he was wounded by enemy fire, grenades and satchel charges, SPC4 Alavardo went from enemy emplacement and silencing them with his fire. His actions forced the enemy to break contact and retreat.

When his comrades reached SPC4 Alvarado's last position, they discovered he had died of his wounds.

For his extraordinary heroism and selflessness, SPC4 Leonard L. Alvarado of Bakersfield Ca, was posthumously awarded The Congressional Medal of Honor.
