My thinking about the larger cities with a college, Knoxville, Austin, and Boulder, is if for some reason the school just disappeared the town would still be there. Growing up in NYC metro area, Boston was considered the ultimate “college town”; more for the prestige of getting into Harvard, MIT or Tufts.

I would get rid of Austin and replace it with Tuscaloosa or Auburn.

Yes. As I mentioned the schools Yankees want to get in tend to be part of large metro area.

I lived in State College, PA for two years when I was lecturing at Penn State. Talk about a college town in the middle of nowhere.

I will say, Tennessee’s fans stick with the team through thick and thin.

I cannot say the same for UF fans, they tend to be very fair weather fans (and sometimes I’m guilty as charged).

Been to Athens, been to Madison. Don’t want to go back to either.

“I would get rid of Austin and replace it with Tuscaloosa or Auburn.”

Agree. Austin is now several million people, it is no more a ‘college town’ than NY City is. But even so, it does meet the Leftist criteria, though.

Fans in the Sunbelt tend to be fair weather well because of the weather. If your team sucks, there are plenty of other things to do on weekends.

” Talk about a college town in the middle of nowhere.”

No kidding. I’ve been to several Big 10 campuses and Penn State was the only one not connected to a significant metropolitan area.

Still, it was a nice town. Its main street reminded me somewhat of East Lansing...just smaller.

I have a fondness for East Lansing. Lots of great memories there. Screw Ann Arbor. That’s about the goofiest town I’ve seen in Michigan. I have to go there soon to U of M hospital. I’m dreading it. It’s not easily navigable.
