Yeah, McKay (as much as I despised him) was a damn good coach, and he did have the knack of the quip.
Right before the 1966 ND vs. USC game, when all the hype was on Notre Dame’s side (and rightfully so, since they had a phenomenal team and won the national championship), McKay quipped, when asked about meeting ND, “Notre who?”
I hate USC, but I’ve liked some of their players.
I’m a UCLA fan and a Notre Dame fan, so obviously USC is anathema to me.
I'm also a fan of Occidental College, where I got my AB degree. The Oxy Tigers have a winning record over UCLA if you count the years when UCLA was known as California Normal School of Los Angeles, and they even won a few games against USC. At Oxy, the glee club still sings,
USC, we've got you beat! Those words were written in 1917 and were likely sung at the 1918 game in which the Tigers trumped Troy 7-6--the last time Occidental beat USC.
Today, you'll meet defeat
From Oxy and the Black and Gold!
