NEW YORK (AP) Attorney General William Barr said Monday that there were serious irregularities at the federal jail where Jeffrey Epstein took his own life as he awaited trial on charges he sexually abused underage girls.
The 66-year-old financier was found Saturday morning in his cell at the chronically short-staffed Metropolitan Correctional Center, in a unit known for holding notorious prisoners under extremely tight security.
I was appalled, and indeed the whole department was, and frankly angry to learn of the MCCs failure to adequately secure this prisoner, Barr said at a police conference in New Orleans. We are now learning of serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning and demand a thorough investigation. The FBI and the office of inspector general are doing just that.
He added: We will get to the bottom of what happened and there will be accountability.
The manner in which Epstein killed himself has not been announced. An autopsy was performed Sunday, but New York City Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Barbara Sampson said investigators were awaiting further information.
A private pathologist, Dr. Michael Baden, observed the autopsy at the request of Epsteins lawyers. Baden was the citys chief medical examiner in the late 1970s and has been called as an expert witness in high-profile cases, including O.J. Simpsons 1994 murder trial.

I’m sure people are shaking in their boots. Because ... you know ... everyone else who’ve committed crimes have been held accountable.
Just ask Jussie Smollet how scared he is.
You might want to find out who else is currently on Deep State Death Row. Are there still prisoners being kept in this failed facility ?
Probably like the video surveillance in Epstein’s block failed during the period when he was, er, committed suicided.
Your agency, Jeff . . . er, Bill.
It would be hilarious to have a recording of this speech and apply a laugh track to it. If there isnt already plenty of laughter on the recording, of course.
Irregularities? Are you daft?
If Barr gave a crap then he could have made sure that Epstein was in a safe environment in he first place. Barr full well knows that the FBI and NY are full of crooks who will stoop to any low to protect their masters.
“Our chief law enforcement agencies are crumbling around him.”
If you mean that they (primarily DOJ, FBI, DEA, ATF) have been overrun by internal and external rogue elements, I would agree.
But, I don’t think this is anything new although the problem today is more acute than ever. We really shouldn’t have these agencies in their present form because there are no external controls and as they themselves like to say, they are independent. Right now with the Epstein case, we have elements of the DOJ investigating themselves; that will generate a lot if trust I’m sure. The other thing is that they operate in secret most of the time and trying to get unredacted documents from them is almost impossible (ask Judicial watch). They often use secret and criminal informants for their dirty work and I believe in the case of the DEA they don’t need to disclose their identity after the investigations are over.
It’s time we restructure these agencies before the country is essentially taken over by them (which almost happened under Comey) . Devolve all power involving domestic cases back to the State agencies and forbid Federal intrusion.
.
Oh, thanks.
The articles I read didn’t mention it being Federal, just it was a ‘Manhattan jail’.
Okay, well, looks like Ms. James is off the hook on this one.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I wholeheartedly agree.
There is way too much power concentrated in unaccountable, independent agencies. As they say, power corrupts. The Founding Fathers intuitively knew this and warned us against such potential for abuse.
In the case of these law enforcement agencies I think there’s a danger of becoming what they are supposed to be fighting against. Being around lawless behavior can apparently be contagious.
I’m not sure what the answer is right now but we need to start thinking in terms of decentralizing their power, establishing some type of oversight board to enforce accountability, and enforce punishment against those who abuse their positions of trust.

Absolutely right. Epstein was one of the most high profile prisoners in the world. Barr knew full that if anything happened to Epstein it would be a blow to justice, and his department. Yet he evidently took no interest in the situation. This was an epic failure of leadership.
Some times when there are operational issues of great significance to an organization executives have to step out of the C Suite and get involved to make sure everyone is doing their job. Its all hands on deck when the storm is approaching.
Barr has been around long enough to know the legal, political and PR risks inherent in dealing with high profile cases. He dropped the ball. Big time.
