Somebody needs to do the math: how much would it cost to provide electric filling stations on the scale we currently have gas filling stations?
...
Do people’s garages with electric outlets count?
I believe 90% of recharging is done at home or at work.
It’s the charging time. I can get enough fuel in my car to go 450 miles in 10 minutes.
This is true - but the energy has to come from somewhere. Is our current generating capacity up to this increase? What does it mean for the power grid? Some states (like California) are already approaching capacity with their electric grid.
That’s because they are COMMUTER VEHICLES... once thats all you have are electrics, you will need to be able to charge them “on the road”, and without MILLIONS of places to do so, its a non starter.
They haven’t solved the RANGE/BATTERY ratio issue
Once that is solved you will need to solve the recharging issue.... Not only, as others pointed out, ON THE ROAD recharging, but the power grid itself being able to handle all new load draw.
No big deal if one house in 100 has an electric vehicle, but if you want 1-2 electric vehicles in every garage, the existing power grid cannot produce or deliver that kind of power, so you are talking BILLIONS (and honestly TRILLIONS of infrastructure upgrades that will be needed to be built and put in place)....
The “electric vehicle” being the PRIMARY vehicle is a DREAM... that would require TRILLIONS OF PUBLIC INVESTMENT to make happen, and do you see any money flowing to upgrade and improve the power grid happening????
If you do, you are wearing some rose colored glasses.
Its a nice dream, but its DECADES AWAY even if the fed decided TODAY to make it a priority
what needs to happen is to be able to swap out the battery for a freshly recharged pack. Like you do with a propane tank now, instead of taking it for a refill. A five minute refueling v. a half hour or more.
NYSEG in NYS is asking for a 24% rate increase for electricity.
NYSEG consumers, enjoy your electric cars.
Oil refineries consume huge amounts of energy and also pollute; at least with electricity, there is a single source of energy. Air emissions are down due to clean coal, more use of natural gas, and renewable initiatives. The Tesla Model 3 extended range has a 310 mile travel range. The big car manufacturers have abandoned EV’s because they can’t compete and probably don’t want to compete.
