Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s book on ‘gutsy’ women might be great if anyone else wrote it

According to its description, it’s for “tiny feminists, mini activists and little kids who are ready to take on the world.” In addition to classic heroines such as Harriet Tubman and Helen Keller, the book also includes Communist Clara Lemlich and Republican Margaret Chase Smith.

It also includes the unavoidable cameo by Hillary. She doesn't get a mention, but her portrait hangs in a gallery illustration at the front of the book. If you needed evidence that too many children’s books are political, She Persisted is just one example.

That leaves little hope, aside from the fact that the former secretary of state and her daughter are writing it, that The Book of Gutsy Women is really just about “gutsy” women.(snip)

There is, however, one type of "gutsy" lifestyle that will surely not be highlighted: a family-oriented one. Hillary struggled for years to distance herself from her mocking 1992 comments about baking cookies, which drew the ire of stay-at-home moms across the country.

“I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies and had teas, but what I decided to do was to fulfill my profession,” she said. In the last legs of her 2016 presidential campaign, though, she embraced them.

Hillary and Chelsea may have amassed an eclectic line-up of activists for their upcoming book, and they may even succeed in keeping The Book of Gutsy Women from being overly political. (At least it's not called Nasty Women.)

But the authors will also carry their own blind spots into the project: Chelsea, thinking politicians such as Warren are the types of leaders young girls should emulate, and Hillary, thinking the greatest things women can accomplish are the loudest.
