Yankees, White Sox to play at ‘Field of Dreams’ site in 2020

Major League Badebwll will build it, and the Yankees and White Sox will come.

The clubs are headed to heaven — err, Iowa — in August of 2020, where they’ll face off at the location of the iconic baseball film “Field of Dreams”, MLB announced on Thursday morning. A temporary, 8,000 seat stadium will be built at the site of the 1989 movie starring Kevin Costner, according to ESPN.

The announcement was made with Yankees star outfielder Aaron Judge partaking in a scene from the movie, where he asks the famous line “is this heaven?” originally said by Ray Liotta’s “Shoeless” Joe Jackson. He is promptly given the iconic answer, “no, it’s Iowa,” by Costner’s character Ray Kinsella.

Having grown up in the 1950's as a youthful fan of the boys of summer, I find this kind of neat in a romantic Americana sort of way. Then again there is a good chance MLB will bastardize what should be an otherwise fun and nostalgic event.

I hope they don’t destroy it with the build-up and tear-down of the ballpark.

If they don’t let the corn grow up to the edge of the outfield they’ll ruin the nostalgia.

They will probably decide to have an LBGTQ Pride Night.

The temporary diamond well be in the field next to the permanent site.

2 aesthetic problems:
- they have to expand into the corn field another 90 feet or so to make it a size worthy of a major league park.
- they’ll have to put in a wall - the corn just won’t cut it.

That said, they’d better use 1919-era unifroms.

I guess they might have to, but that just makes it somehow a bit less appealing.

I just found a rendering of what they're planning: Tweet link to it.

Makes sense. 2020 is the year of vision.

Exodus 3

3 And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.
4 And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush [left field], and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
5 And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.

The Left field player is Why:

Baseball’s holy ground

Set aside the cares of the world for a few minutes, and imagine yourself in the “friendly confines” of a major league baseball stadium.

The smell of freshly cut grass, the crack of a bat, the roar of the crowd, and the taste of a ball park hot dog can chase away a lot of tension, and make you believe (at least for a while) the words intoned by James Earl Jones in the movie “Field of Dreams”:

“it reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again”.

And

Joseph Jefferson Jackson (July 16, 1887 – December 5, 1951), nicknamed "Shoeless Joe", was an American star outfielder who played Major League Baseball (MLB) in the early 1900s. He is remembered for his performance on the field and for his alleged association with the Black Sox Scandal, in which members of the 1919 Chicago White Sox participated in a conspiracy to fix the World Series

I agree.

Three or four hours to Chicago. Long bus ride for major-leaguers.

Iconic? Hardly.

That was by far the worst and the dumbest so-called ‘baseball’ movie of all time.

I was at the site about 5 years ago.
Looked just like the movie.
People were out on the field playing catch, quite nice and very laid back. Spent an hour hanging out in the sunshine.

But, it was about to change.

A wealthy family out of Chicago had bought the property and planned to build 20+ additional baseball fields out in the cornfield, and also build a dorm to house 500 inner city Chicago kids for baseball camps.

Don’t know if they went through with it, but it would have ended the charm of the whole deal.

I dont remember much about it, saw it so many years ago. There sure seems to be nostalgia about it.

Me and my grandson love to attend the minor league games in Greenville SC , Shoeless Joe’s hometown. There is a certain magic and innocence to the game when seen through the eyes of a six year old.

They never had the money, or at least didn’t want to risk it, and it wasn’t a welcome idea in Dubuque County (to say the least).

Very sweet. Very American.

The enemies of this great country (foreign and domestic) are going to soon wish that they hadn’t done what they did.

God knows how to restore order. He sees your grandson.

Great stuff. I have rediscovered baseball since the NFL embraced America-haters. There was ONE kneeler, a white moron on the A’s 2 years ago, and he flamed out. No one else.

My bad 👎. My copy and paste skills on a mobile device are proportional to my eyesight on any given day. I even proofed it and still mucked it out.
