“Origins of U.S. Navy, Marines, & Coast Guard”
The Coast Guard was founded on the 28th ofJanuary 1915 when they Revenue Cutter Service, the Lighthouse Service, and the Lifesaving Service all merged and became what we currently know as the United States Coast Guard.
So has the Coast Guard been around since 1790 as they claim? Well part of what is now termed as the Coast Guard did in fact become established in 1790. But that doesn’t really make the Coast Guard that old because officially the Coast Guard became known as the Coast Guard in 1915.
On the 4th of August 1790 what the article is referring to is the establishment as the Revenue Cutter Service not the Coast Guard.
Every year on August 4th the Coast Guard celebrates or acknowledges is that it is Coast Guard day, actually it is Revenue Cutter Service day, and Coast Guard day is January 28th but January 28th is not celebrated or acknowledged as Coast Guard day even though historically, it should be.
