I generally oppose gun control, wrote Donald Trump in his 2000 book, The America We Deserve, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun.
It was an uncontroversial view for a freewheeling New Yorker, who moved in the same circles as Bill and Hillary Clinton, and liked to speak his mind.
Twelve years later, even after he had begun his shift to the right, Trump endorsed Barack Obamas push for tougher gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting that cost the lives of 20 children and six members of staff.
President Obama spoke for me and every American in his remarks in Connecticut, he tweeted.
But his line shifted as he joined the Republican race for president in 2015 and in office has fluctuated at times between an apparent instinct for action after mass shootings tempered by an embrace of conservative causes. Those views are back in the spotlight after another weekend of gun violence.

Its often argued that the American murder rate is high because guns are more available here than in other countries. Democrats want to confiscate all guns, which is a dumb idea because only the law-abiding citizens would turn in their guns and the bad guys would be the only ones left armed. The Republicans walk the NRA line and refuse even limited restrictions.
I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. With todays internet technology we should be able to tell within 72 hours if a potential gun owner has a record.
The Rats are smart enough to know that if they can get Trump to buckle under on guns he is a one term president. It would appear many GOP in the Senate and House agree and are on board.
This is how Trump separates himself from his base.
From a purely objective political standpoint: Trump may have just as much to lose by allowing the Democrats to totally hijack the mantle of safety, leaving room for THEM to take even MORE extreme measures...I hate putting things this way, but imagine if some sort of tragedy as happened in El Paso/Dayton took place the week of the election. Swing voters would take note and either stay home or vote based on emotion and fear of their lives alone.
Sorry but that’s how these things work.
Hint: I don't think his answer will satisfy you.
Note: Just F.O. if you plan to hit on me for the pronoun.
No question many people make decisions with their emotions.
Donald Jr. is the pro-gun member of the family, not President Trump.
Let's get wise. Let this shit pass. Until Trump signs a piece of shit legislation, let's ignore this crap.
If President Trump passes any kind of gun control on any level especially red flag laws he will not be reelected. It matters not how bad the alternatives are. If we cant maintain liberty under Trump then we cant fix the broken republic by voting. He should not even be threatening gun control. Worse yet is this notion of tying infringement of the second amendment in exchange for border security. Sorry no thank you. Secure the damn border , I dont care how you do it but Americans should not give up our rights to get the government to do one of the few jobs its supposed to do. Personally my patience is growing thin with the President on this issue. He should know better.
He should take the non PC route and push Constitutional Carry.
If we allow ANY gun control type legislation to go through, I guarantee that gun violence/mass shooting will increase. These problem exist right now because the left supports and empowers them. They are the foundational incidents that create more impetus for more gun control, until the goal of total confiscation is reached. Passing gun control legislation will appear to be ‘blood in the water’ and that we are weakening and they are winning. This is a winning strategy for the socialist/communist in their mind, at least. And it will continue and increase if we allow this to happen.
And this is not about winning the next election. President Trump can do that on his own. One piece of legislation is not going to make me turn my back on him and either not vote or vote for a democrat. Nobody here at FR is that stupid. He is the man we need in the White House. my biggest concern is who is too replace him in 2024.
