DETROIT (AP) — The most powerful street-legal Ford Mustang ever built will go on sale this fall.

A 5.2-liter supercharged V8 will crank out 760 horsepower in the 2020 Shelby GT500.

The new version has a beefed-up suspension and brakes. It also has a seven-speed automatic transmission that Ford promises will shift smoothly on commutes and quickly on the track. The engine is hand-built at a Michigan factory and comes with unique pistons and other parts. It can crank out 625 foot-pounds of torque, a measure of rotational force.

Thanks. Going with a 3.73 rear-end. Wonder what the gear ratios are.

Here's something from a motortrend piece.

Why not use the 10-speed automatic? The transmissions weigh about the same, and both have minimal parasitic loss. Torque capacity is the differentiator. The GT supercar's twin-clutch transmission internals were already beefy enough, and reinforcing the 10-speed would have been costly and unnecessary. The seven-speed's first gear is about the same as the 10-speeds second, the top gear ratios are roughly equivalent, and this engine hardly needs any torque multiplication to launch stoutly. Oh, and the extra gear ratio steps are unnecessary in a car with this one's performance and fuel—ahem, "economy"—expectations.

I saw something about someone coming out with a 180 mph chip in the fall. It'll probably be redlining in last gear about then. So if you know the redline, you could roughly calculate a ratio for 7th gear.

Given this much torque, the bottom gear ratios are going to be wide apart, narrowing at the top end, because it's pushing against an ever increasing wall of air. No doubt Ford will publish a gear ratio chart soon.

I was involved with setting up a 7-speed tranny on a 600 hp Peterbilt many years ago. I calculated it would do 120 mph when the engine hit max RPM. I took it to 100 mph on the highway myself, just testing the setup. But never found out what it finally achieved on the track.

Assuming it’s an overdrive setup - but I don’t know that.

Ok, back-of-the-napkin, and given a tire height of 27.2" (assuming 305/30R20s) and a 3.73 rear-end, for a 1-1 ratio in 7th, at 180 mph, the engine needs to be spinning at 8,300 RPM, if I didn't overlook something.

I'm guessing it's an overdrive tranny. :)

Looks like the redline is at 7500. Doesn't mean the engine can't exceed that for short periods. So it's conceivable it could do 180 mph without an overdrive transmission.

It has a 9.5:1 compression ratio, a 7500-rpm redline, and about 12 psi of max boost.

I know it’s a thrill to have the power and to ‘give it a goose” now and then, but let’s face it, there’s not many places one can let it out or drive it anywhere near its true capabilities unless one has acces to and wnats to use a private track...using it on public streets is not only illegal but can also pose a danger to others if one decides to ‘thrill” oneself with it....in my youth I had a Firebird that i built to 540 ponies...did many stupid things with it that i wouldn’t even consider doing today...if I had a car with 760 or so ponies today, it would indeed be akin to having a motorboat on a dry lake...it would feel like a sin to just do ‘pedestrian” cruising and I’m no longer foolish enough to make use of such on public surfaces...no longer get a thrill burning up a few bucks of rubber to demonstrate how big and bad I am.

The haven’t used ‘chips’ for years!

Haven’t seen a non-overdrive transmission in years.

When I want to pass I have an extra margin of safety.

My handling and braking give me a greater margin of safety for unexpended situations. Don’t label me for wanting and enjoying my car.

The 2014 could reach 200 with a 3.31 and .74 overdrive.

Sixth was a 0.5

Yeah, well the 2020 Shelby 760 hp Mustang is using a 'new' and 'unusual' transmission, because the Tremec tranny everyone had been using is too weak for this much torque. So I was just wondering out loud if they were going back to a 1-1 in high.

After finding a pic, which I think is the new box, it appears to also be an overdrive - which are weaker than a straight thru the gearbox shaft.

A chip of silicon is still what controls it, pal.

Pal, here was your post. They don’t come out with chips now. That was decades ago. Now the just reprogram the tune.

So what. First gear is where all the ‘abuse’ occurs and it is not a ‘straight-thru’.

Agree - need to have enough power to pass - especially in hilly/mountainous areas.
Not labeling you so much as describing my own transition from wanting/needing power beyond what I would ever really need and use and outgrowing the thirst while still remembering the thrill. Enjoy it...
Funny how you use the “Don’t label me” quip...sounds like a whole other group of folks we talk about here...perhaps you just take others opinions/perceived opinions of you too seriously.....don’t let other people under your skin...might lead to road rage if the personality ain’t mature enough to handle a small perceived slight...

Because first is only used for a brief period of time and torque forward of actual mesh is less than it would be with 'overdrive' gearing. 'Straight-thru' eliminates all wear, except for input and output brg wear.
