WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday called on lawmakers to pass strong gun background checks after two mass shootings over the weekend killed 29 people and sought to blame the nation’s rising violence and divisions on the media.Trump, who is scheduled to deliver public remarks later on Monday following the attacks, appeared to dismiss accusations following the two shootings in Texas and Ohio that his rhetoric has stoked racial hatred and provoked attacks amid a deepening political divide. On Saturday, a gunman killed 20 people at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, in what authorities said appeared to be a racially-motivated hate crime. Just 13 hours later, another gunman in downtown Dayton, Ohio, killed nine people. Dozens were also wounded in both attacks.

Obviously we already have background checks for people who legally buy guns through a firearms dealer. I hope he's not talking about extended background checks where people have to go to a dealer and go through the same process to sell guns to each other then get in a database so the government knows who has what. It's none of their business.

Besides; criminals and those who can't buy guns through legal means simply buy them on the black market. They don't care about "no stinkin' badges".

This kind of thing just makes it harder on the law abiding and does nothing to address the issue of mental illness. The fact is our population is doubling every 50-100 years. So is the population of crazies. The extended background check agenda has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with eventually confiscating our guns when the time is right but first they must know who has them and how many.

This is the one issue that will separate Trump from his base. Look at critical States, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Blue Collar states where there are a lot of hunters and shooters who own MSRs. All it would take is for gun owners in those states to abandon Trump and he is toast. If he starts pushing Red Flag laws like Crenshaw and Graham that will alienate him with his base in other States that recognize the totalitarianism of Red Flag laws.

Background checks...are you allowed to ask if they are citizens? Do they have to validate that they are in the country legally? Do those selling firearms have to run everify before selling weapons? If they fail that check are they deported?

Think of the people who run the schools now. I would never give them that kind of power.

Calm down. Trump is trying to tie it to immigration...which means background checks = everify, illegal immigrant checks...1, it’s not going to happen and 2 Trump seems to be the one for security.

Maybe if the FBI wasn’t so busy colluding with foreign intel trying to frame the President, and spying on the president, and making excuses for moslems, they’d have time to look for nuts.

I’m thinking fed checks. Taking months to be completed.

Otoh as a healthcare worker every job I have had required fingerprints and a background check, for which I gave them my drivers license and it was done in a few hours.

So we shall see. What are “strong” background checks?

Look for the progressives to try to poison the bill with items designed to deny firearms to the greatest number of individuals, especially any non-progressives. Did you ever say that libs need an @$$-kicking? No guns for you! Have you spoken unpleasant truths about homosexuals, blacks, illegals? You are dangerous!

And mental heath issues will be created by lefty psych practitioners who believe in their heart of hearts that anyone who wants a gun MUST be crazy!

The feds will check? This the same fed gov that let the Texas church shooter have a rifle after showing up on the Air Force base with a gun to kill his commander? After strangling his wife?
You talking about the same Fed gov that gave that gave Dylan Roof his gun to use in that black church in Charleston AFTER he failed the background check?
You talking the same fedgov that STILL claims Trump is a Russian spy and now says Mitch McConnell is one too?
You talking the same fedgov that tells us islam is peace and floods 2 million of them in after 9/11?
The same fedgov that is flooding our nation with tens of millions of mexicans? The Fed gov that cannot seem to decide to kick trannies out of the military?

You sure trust the decision making of this federal government more than I do.

If he gives in any to the anti-gunners, he will stand a good chance of losing here in Texas. I genuinely hope he doesn’t go that way.

We already have strong background checks.

Outlawing private sales is one step closer to registration.

Registration is necessary for confiscation.

Here's the key paragraph from the article:

On Monday, Trump appealed to both political parties and said the victims’ should not “die in vain.” He urged lawmakers to pass legislation requiring stricter screenings for gun buyers and possibly tie it to immigration, a top issue that has fueled his presidency and drawn criticism over his comments about migrants and others.

The DemonShits will never agree to such a deal because they actually want the massacres to continue, don't give a damn about the lives of the victims, don't give a damn about the horrific damage their horde of infected and infectious illegal alien migrants is doing to the country, and are simply in the whole thing for political gain. Indeed, this is why PDJT's proposal is brilliant: it's actually designed to do something about the problems, especially the illegal alien horde, and, because of that, the DemonShits will reject it, proving what total liars and hypocrites they are.

Trump is on TV right now pushing just that.

So has it been determined the Texas and Ohio shooters both bought their rifles with no NICS checks ? Haven’t seen that.

Not one bit. I am just guessing that this is one possibility for the Strong background check that is coming.

Will no one point out publicly that we’ve had more mass murders at higher rates since there has been more gun control?! What happened in the old days, prior to 1970? How many mass murders were there when there were virtually no laws?

IOW, guns are NOT the issue.
