It’s not really a horror flick. It’s psychological drama with strong intonations of sheer madness.
Me either; I’ll pass on it.
Seems like a brilliant choice to put two talented actors in a singular yet interesting location—a light house.
Producers are drawn to such low-risk investments, known as “contained” stories. Costs of production are exponentially lower, allowing for greater production value at lower costs. But the water element could have easily driven up the costs, along with the star salaries. There’s a mermaid in the story as well, according to imdb.
The repeated line, “Why’d ya spill your beans?” is intriguing, but the dramatic elements could go either way. If there are some good scares it will probably be successful, otherwise it will be an arthouse film.
My immediate gut instinct from the trailer is that there will be an intended surprise twist ending that is not so surprising—the twosome have been drinking tainted liquor which has driven them mad. Hope I’m wrong. My gut instinct on Get Out was completely wrong.
As for the Oscar aspirations, horror rarely gets even a nomination. Only one horror movie has ever won best picture—Silence of the Lambs.
The Lighthouse has this imdb note: “Rated R for sexual content, nudity, violence, disturbing images, and some language”. As someone who would like to see more faith- and family-friendly pictures succeed, I’m disappointed. Finding a good flick these days is like trying to eat a gourmet meal from a dumpster.
