Once Southern Democrats were forced to free their slaves, they attempted to effectively re-enslave them by passing Black Codes which required former slaves to be “apprenticed” to “employers” and punished those who left. In many cases, the fate of sharecroppers was little better than slavery.

Black Codes were also called “Jim Crow Laws,” referring to an 1828 New Orleans riverboat song called “Jump Jim Crow,” in which a blackfaced performer appeared in a mocking caricature and danced:

Weel about and turn about and do jis so, Eb’ry time I weel about I jump Jim Crow.

Many Black Codes prohibited blacks from owning guns, such as in Mississippi, 1865: “No freedman, Negro, or mulatto shall carry or keep firearms or ammunition.”

On Nov. 22, 1865, Republicans denounced Mississippi’s Democrat legislature for enacting Black Codes as they institutionalized discrimination.

On Feb. 5, 1866, Republican Congressman Thaddeus Stevens introduced legislation to give former slaves “40 acres and a mule,” but Democrats opposed it, led by President Andrew Johnson.

On April 9, 1866, Republicans in Congress overrode President Johnson’s veto and passed the Civil Rights Act of 1866, conferring rights of citizenship on freed slaves.

To force Southern States to extend State citizenship rights to former slaves, Republicans in the U.S. House passed the 14th Amendment, May 10, 1866, as did the Senate, June 8, 1866. One hundred percent of Democrats voted against it. The 14th Amendment was adopted by the states on July 28, 1868.

Lengthy but a good ref. Thanks Mr. Federer. No doubt this will/would get plenty of blow back from our NON racist uber tolerant immigrant loving pals on the left since they have bestowed the title of racis' naughtzees upon any and all republicrats and conservatives. May be factually correct but the libodems will still claim they are the ones that REALLY care about the downtrodden. Right!? Enjoy.

In many cases, the fate of sharecroppers was little better than slavery...pretty much the fate my ancestors faced working in the coal mines in northeastern Pennsylvania back in the 1860's - they owed their soul to the company store, as the song goes - I'm waiting for my reparations......

Misunderstanding the Southern Realignment

This is a very good read, even though it's 9 years old. The democrats like to say that all the democrat segregationists became Republicans in 1964-68 due to Richard Nixon's Southern strategy.

The article proves that Republicans didn't become dominate in the South until the late 1980s early 1990s.

The famous Southern Segregationists of the 50s and 60s all went to their graves as democrats, with the notable exception of Strom Thurmond.

Great article. Very thorough and well documented. How blacks can associate with this party of scum and yet dare to call Republicans racist is testament to how we let our schools down by surrendering control to liberals.
