It has been said, by the village elders, that there are monsters beyond the trees. And yet I have travelled outside, and almost always have returned unscathed.

Yet, on this night, my luck was changed. I have seen a thing. A thing so indescribably horrible that I can scarce believe it, even now.

I thought at once that I would be turned to stone, and for a moment I was. I couldn't move to flee. My mouth opened to scream but no sound came. And then, like a feral animal confronted by a predator, I flew like the wind, branches tearing at my flesh, not daring to look back lest I see that the beasts pursued.

With my last strength, I burst through the trees and arrived in the bosom of my sanctuary. My safe space. It will be long before I tarry beyond the tree line.

I have these few words for you, O my brothers and sisters. Do. Not. Go. Beyond. The. Trees.

There ARE monsters.

I saw them. And worse. They saw me.
