The sub is a modified Soviet diesel-electric Romeo class with a larger sail to accommodate three missiles. The Romeo is a 50s design. Not sure what technology the ChiComs have shared with the Norks to update it.

I always say that all NK seeks with negotiations is time, time for delays in actually resolving anything, delays in which new means of war are developed and built as new means of threats, for new negotiations, for more delays. That has been the regime’s diplomatic modus operandi during all its existence.
China may one day rue the day it fought to save that regime.
