I think a lot of those portraits were as accurate as photographs, but of course it would depend on the artist wouldn't it. You can look at painting of someone like John Quincy Adams and then look at his photograph and see how spot on those paintings are so I would assume paintings of say Jefferson and Washington and beyond even though there are no photos of them are pretty spot on as well.

Interesting. The artist softened the eyes but otherwise you could guess that the painting was made from the photo.
