Talked to a 'motor officer' years ago, who said that when he got a call at night, he not only did NOT turn on his "lights & siren," but he turned his headlight(s) OFF. His reason? Something along the lines of: "Cars are completely unpredictable, and if they see you coming, it gets worse, not better."
Of course, maybe he was just an adrenaline addict (like a lot of ER docs, etc.)...

My brother can testify to that. He was in full array on a call one night, when an F150 pulled out of a tavern parking lot, right in front of him. Made him a believer in seat belts and air bags.
