The author Phillip Pullman wrote this trilogy as a big middle finger to C.S. Lewis. I actually was one of the few who saw the "The Golden Compass" at the theater. I wish I could get back that three hours of my life. The tween/teenager protagonist Lyra is an absolute spoilt, and rotten kid.

Atheists need to have something to enjoy while they can, I guess. Eternity is coming and they won’t have anything to smile about. This is the only “heaven” any of them will ever experience for millions upon millions of billions of years. It’s extremely sad, really; but they get what they choose.

Yep, Pullman’s stated goal with those books was to ‘kill God’ and do for atheists what Lewis’ Narnia did for Christians. Pretty disgusting idea for children’s literature but of course the entertainment industry loves the concept like it loves any ‘f-— you’ to Christians (e.g., Handmaid’s Tale).

Pullman's novels were controversial when they were first published, if I remember correctly. Lewis' Narnia novels were far more publicly accepted and became the most well-known of Lewis' non-religious works.
