A swimming school of fish fossilized in real time

by Phil Robinson

Published: 18 July 2019 (GMT+10)

A limestone shale slab from the Green River Formation, USA, has incredibly ‘captured’ a mass of 257 fish swimming together in a school.1 The fish, each just under 1 in (2.5 cm) long, belong to an extinct species, Erismatopterus levatus. Just before being fossilised they were swimming in the same direction. Swimming together in a school is a dynamic process and this slab amazingly preserves, in ‘freeze frame’ as it were, this coordinated collective motion. Such discoveries are rare. As pointed out in the New York Times, “It’s difficult, for instance, to find evidence of schooling fish in the fossil record. You need just the right circumstances to fossilize something like a school of fish in place within a rock. Then, that rock has to survive intact long enough for a paleontologist to discover it and study it”.2

The bible is the Holy Spirit Inspired word of God- it is God’s word written through man- It is not based on legends- it is based on God’s word through man- You would do well to study just how Spirit Inspired it is-

[[I wouldn’t take it literally.]]

You are welcome to your opinion- however, enough people have Accepted Christ, and know His personal dealings with us on a level the unsaved can not know, to know that when God states He spoke His word through the Holy Spirit to man to write down- That He was not lying-

Again=- you are insulting people when you claim they believe in myths and legends, and inform they they shouldn’t take God’s word literally- God is infallible, incapable of lies- and when His word states that He spoke it through His Holy Spirit- every bit of it- His word is golden- His truthfulness and His word are what make Him God- To suggest His word is nothing but a compilation of myths and legends after God tells us directly that His whole word is truth, demeans the God billions of people serve- You are suggesting He lied in His word, or worse yet- it’s not Holy Spirit Inspired Word of God like He tells us-

[[Live with good in your heart.]]

I live with Christ in my heart- man’s ‘Good’ is nothing but filthy rags compared to Him-

[[He will judge you on how you treated the people around you. ]]

No He won’t- We are not judged on our sins because our sins have been forgiven- We will not be judged- We will be rewarded however-

[[I try to live in reality, and physical reality trumps mythology.]]

there ya go again- You are insinuating Those who believe God are living in make believe world by that claim

[[and even a casual geologist can see processes that obviously took great ages of time.]]

Many of those evidences have been proven to be able to happen in short cataclysmic events- and there are plenty of evidences that show a cataclysm did happen- so don’t tell us you have an exclusive grasp on ‘reality’ because you don’t believe the bible account of creation and flood- If you wish to say you have a different view, based on evidence you think supports your opinion- that’s fine- but couching you opinion in terms of ‘reality’ vs myth, unreality is insulting-

You know- I i ran into you a awhile back- and you were just as condescending then as now- You page looked familiar to me, and I recall having a very similar discussion with you then- Obviously you don’t care to quit insulting Those who believe in their Creator

That shoudla read

You are insinuating Those who believe in God by insinuating that they are living in make believe world by saying stuff like that- it’s condescending- insulting, and should be beneath you! If your belief is so strong in your mind- then why the need to be so condescending towards those that don’t share your opinion?

When Mount Saint Helens, in Washington State, blew it’s top trees on the slope were instantly petrified. Something previously unheard of. Science is never settled. Anything that happened millions of years ago is mere speculation and theory.

My prior post was meant for you....

Sorry Buckeye McFrog. The only reasonable explanation for massive limestone formations rests with Dr. Walt Brown and his hydroplate theory.

If anything this proves a sudden cataclysm covered these fish with sediment.

I think it was more apocalyptic than the Flood. Immanuel Velikovsky's Earth in Upheaval speaks of shoals of fossilized fish found in the UK and a ton of other examples, indicating (to me anyway) a tilting of the earth's axis or some other celestial catastrophe.

Maybe a river overflowed and the fish got trapped in a small pool of water and died, right after it froze. The next spring sedime t was washed over the school pool of fish.

They are killed by the anoxic events, which is just a fancy way of saying a lack of oxygen in the water. Reducing conditions. Therefore, most of the usual critters that eat dead fish (worms, etc.) aren’t around as they don’t like anoxia. Ever seen a swamp with that black nasty mud and murky water? That is anoxia. That is how coal is formed.
