They had to invent dark matter because their equations didn’t explain the Universe as observed. Intelligent people would try to create equations that explain reality.

None of the universe’s mass is missing. It’s right where it has always been. Revise your theories!

PS, what about “dark energy”?

One physicist is working on a theory that what others are calling "dark matter" is really just the side-effect of the quantization of inertia. He has shown that if you quantize the inertia in Einstein's equations you get the same (or at least similar) effects of suspecting there is some invisible dark matter.

However, astronomers have recently discovered galaxies which appear to have no dark matter. If the quantized inertia theory were correct, then it should be seen in all galaxies.

All in all very interesting stuff.
