I've read that in India and China...both of which are desperately poor countries...ultrasound clinics can be found on every street corner and dirt road.

The reason for that is because girl babies just aren't welcome in those societies and,as a result,pregnant women (and/or their husbands) want to know the gender of the baby so that girl babies can be flush down the toilet.
