I wondered where they came up with “squad” which is a military term, mostly.

It occurs in hip-hop rap.

Maybe it’s a play on “The Mod Squad”, who were a bunch of undercover cop hipsters.

Actually it’s more like a “goon squad” and something that very juvenile persons would come up with, like those in high school.

Most teenagers now refer to their circle of friends as their “squad” now. Crew, posse, gang are all out.
