Water is scarce and important on small islands. Perhaps heavy vegetation was removed to allow more rainwater run into cisterns underground, which is the typical place to store water on these kinds of islands.

Those islands get nearly 50” of rainfall/year.

And there doesn’t appear to be ‘drainage’ sytems to allow catchment of water. Just barren landscape.
