Think I’m kidding?
I’ve been saying this for years! In 9 out of 10 commercials with mixed race, the white guy is either the dumbest, smallest, geekiest, weakest, ugliest,...whatever is lesser than in the context of the commercial. But it’s not just white guys. There’s a pecking order included in that 9 out of 10 stat. White guys are at the top in terms of being the designated “lesser than” in the commercials. If it’s a white woman and a white man, the woman is “better than,” whether she’s the one driving the car or the one making the correct decision. If it’s a black woman and a white woman, the white woman is lesser than. If it’s a black man and a black woman, the black man is lesser than. Whatever the perceived minority or “suppressed” demographic is in the context of the commercial, that’s the one that is “more than.”
And in 9 out of 10 commercials that include dating or married couples...there’s a black man with a white woman. The 10th instance isn’t a black woman with a white man, it’s simply that they are all of matching races. Almost never do you see a white man with a black woman. Every person I’ve ever pointed these things out to inevitably comes back and says, “I never thought about it, but you’re right.” Once it’s pointed out, you can’t not see it.
