A niggerhead is an old logging term for a rock jutting out into the logging road that you had to watch out for. Of course I imagine was derogatory even way back then.
I’m guessing it is on I-90 in Montana that there is a sign for Crazy Woman Creek. Always reminds me of the scene from the movie Jeremiah Johnson where he tries to help out the woman that became crazy after an Indian attack wiped out her family (IIRC).

I believe the term was also used to describe the steam powered winches used to haul logs up to the landing.
Those old time loggers were some rough customers - the cemetery where many of my ancestors are buried has maybe two dozen graves of men killed in the woods during the 30's.
Safety? They never heard that word.
